👻 Holy Hallowtide is Back!

Hi friends, Hallowtide is upon us! It's one of my favorite parts of the Church calendar. What is Hallowtide, you ask? It’s the ancient Christian custom of praying for the dead and celebrating the countless (named and unnamed) saints in Heaven over the course of three days: All Hallows Eve (aka Halloween), All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. It once had its own octave for the eight days of Allhallowtide, but that was discontinued in 1955. It’s a beautiful practice to focus your prayer on the...

Welcome to the fifth week of Lent. These upcoming final weeks of Lent always fly by for me each year, and Holy Week begins in one week! 😱 Speaking of Holy Week...If there's one thing I'm good at it's Holy Week. It is peak Fiat Sanctum. I've gradually honed my Holy Week traditions and prayer practices over the years, and this year we can experience it together. Welcome to the fourth week of Lent, and it's a special one: Today is Laetare Sunday. Laetare means "Rejoice" and, similar to Gaudete Sunday during Advent, this is a milestone that we're more than halfway through Lent 😱 It doesn't feel possible, but here we are. The liturgical color for today is rose, so I wore my pink sweater to Mass this morning as I am a huge Catholic nerd. Note: I am opening up the weekly Lenten emails to the entire Fiat Sanctum newsletter list, so if you're new here then...

Advent begins this Sunday. Are you panicking, just a little? I love Advent, but it stresses me out! It would always sneak up on me while in a turkey and pie-induced coma post-Thanksgiving, and I’d feel behind the entire season. Chocolate coins would forget to be purchased until the night before St. Nicholas Day, Advent wreaths would be without candles, and my poor Advent devotional would be forgotten each day in the morning rush. Preparing for Christ’s birth felt a lot more like guilt,...

Hey Reader, We're in the first week of Lent...how is everything going? It's never too late to draw closer to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving this season. Whether this is your first Lent (or maybe your first Lent in a long time) or you're an old pro, Lent can feel a bit overwhelming. It can come with the desire to "do Lent" perfectly, and anytime we break a Lenten promise it can feel like failure. What if Lent could feel simple and peaceful? You can pick one area in your life to...

Lent is Here. It's Time to Get Back to Basics. After much anticipation (and perhaps a bit of trepidation) Lent is here. And, as you'll see in Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon this week, it's time to get back to our spiritual basics. Let’s take a look at the week ahead. Calendar Print out this week’s planner (new for Lent!) and let’s get started. Sunday, March 6: 1st Sunday of Lent Monday, March 7: Memorial of Sts. Felicity and Perpetua Wednesday, March 9: Memorial of St. Frances of Rome Friday,...
